Back Slide, Back Pedal, Back in Business with home-based Back rehab

It was just over a week ago that I wrenched my back while heaving a hand-held grocery basket onto the cashier counter. (not bending at the knees) Instantly, an internal alarm sounded as I faced the real challenge of making the one block walk home.

For two years I held my back spasms in check, keeping fit, doing my power hour daily hill romps, including my 20 to 30 minutes on the home elliptical, using my stretch bands to build upper body strength, but I had given up my Downtown ‘Y’ membership, where I relied on the Gravitron as a primary spine stretcher.

Left to my own devices, I figured I could keep my spine well-oiled without daily downtown trips to the gym.

Fast Forward:

While I’d finally managed to crawl home from the grocery, feeling like I had a bone-crushing accident that would permanently incapacitate me, I embraced the faint hope that I could rehabilitate my back within the confines of my apartment.

But the one necessary trip I had to make to my physician was one my worst BART journeys on record. While standing and walking had become an option in the days since my Market mishap, sitting was a death sentence.

Trying to lift myself out of the special seat designated for seniors, handicapped, and pregnant women triggered so much pain, that I thought about passing my stop and taking indefinite round-trip rides with no destination.

The saving grace was that I had packed a walking stick that dug me out of my seat with enough upward thrust to catapult me into another death-crunching squat on a Kaiser shuttle bus.

To cut a long story short, after being subjected to a deep probing back exam by my doc, with an aging spine slide show magnified to big screen proportion, I was sent home with a packet of floor exercises that were all too familiar.

At this point in time, the good news is that I can sit without excruciating pain and even smoothly lift myself up to standing posture, (with my walking sticks) largely due to my self-devised routines as illustrated below. (Add in a new Piano Chair with an ergonomic lumbar pad and I’m BACK in business!)

In 2013, I created a Go-fit Red Ball vid that’s part of my BACK to normal program.

Finally, Wishing all my blog readers a pain-free Happy Holiday and a Wonderful New Year!
